I Could Have Been Great!

I could have been great!

Have you ever heard, thought or said something like this?

I was recently in my hometown playing golf with family. I’ve loved the game since I was young, however, I’m not the best player. This hole was different. It was a par 5 and I hit every ball perfectly. The feeling was amazing!

About the time I sunk my putt, I had a flashback to  a moment in my youth when I decided not to consistently practice golf.

A business partner of my grandfather had been visiting from out of town. It was my 11th birthday. He joined us for dinner and did something I’ve always remembered. He gave me a set of golf clubs, a $100 dollar bill and then said, “Chris take this money and get a golf lesson. You won’t regret it."

I didn’t take him up on his advice and deeply regret it.

I could have been a great golfer.

I see hints of greatness in my golf game every once in a while --- just like the par 5 I spoke of before, In those moments, I realize what I could have been.

How many times in our lives will we say, “I could have been great?” I don't know about you, but I don't want that to be a consistent phrase that describes my life.

Next time you are faced with an option to do or not do something why not ask the question, “Will I look back one day and say, ‘I could have been great?

It's worked well for me and I believe it will do the same for you.
